Feng Chen (b. 1986) was born in Wuhan and currently lives and works in Amsterdam and Hangzhou. In 2009, he graduated from the Department of New Media Art at the China Academy of Art. He later joined a two-year program at the Rijksakademie in the Netherlands as an artist-in-residence from 2014 to 2015. The appearance and disappearance of images are central to Feng’s work and, as a result so is the factor of time. In his videos, frames alternate in a continuous loop. He points his camera at the things that constitute life – people and events – but by folding and layering their appearance, he translates them into something confusing. Feng questions the manipulative power of media. He takes cameras apart and reconstructs them, altering the way they operate and represent the world. He dissects the synchronization between visuals and audios, inserting a wedge between the different senses and leading us to question which sense we should trust. In the end, the truth may very well lie halfway.

Feng’s work has been exhibited internationally and are included in a number of institutional collections, including the White Rabbit Contemporary Art Collection in Australia, the China Art Museum and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten.
