Introducing the Long March Residency Program
The Long March is proud to welcome Arts Council of England
Fellow Mark Harris as the first international participant
in the Long March residency program. The residency program
studio is located at the Long March Space in Beijing's Dashanzi
Art District (Factory 798). With over 100 artspaces, galleries,
artist and design studios within a 2 km radius, Factory
798 is the most energetic and dynamic art scene in China
today. Run on a non-profit basis by the Long March Foundation
(New York) and the 25000 Cultural Transmission Center (Beijing),
the program offers individuals interested in the study of
visual culture in China a space to live and work in China,
as well as assistance and support to help realize projects
for a period of up to six months.
For a two month period this summer, Mark Harris will develop
a project based on his experiences in China and the interaction
with the local arts community. Since being initiated in
1999, to being carried out during the summer of 2002, and
to its continual marching today, the Long March project
has always looked to work with individuals interested in
the social aspects of visual culture from various backgrounds
and regions to think about the historical consciousness
and social nature of artistic creation and display, exploring
how art connects with the broader masses, and how visual
displays reveal their underlying political, social, economic,
historical, geographical, and humanistic backgrounds. To
be able to provide individuals with a space to work and
interact with the community in China, and a network of support
to help individuals realize their goals is an important
service that the Long March is excited to introduce.
The Long March residency program is directed at constructing
a platform for this type of exchange which is essential
for the crossing of borders of knowledge, discipline, and
understanding, and providing deeper insight into how we
view our own contemporary contexts.
Mark Harris is a visual artist, critic, and curator who
is currently teaching at the University of Cincinnati. His
works encompass a diversity of mediums including painting,
video, photography, as well as audio and textual materials.
Aside from showing at several art spaces throughout the
UK, he has written extensively for both British and American
art press.
We are now taking applications for future openings. For
