Partial Zones ¨C Zhang Hui Solo Exhibition
October 14 ¨C November 26, 2006
|
Different from previous projects in which the artist used his sensitivity towards live art and site as a narrative structure, in this exhibition, Zhang Hui challenges himself to use the two dimensional form to give expression to a story of another fantastic world.
Zhang Hui¡¯s exceptional use of variegated elements is once again on display as he carefully enters into the two dimensional plane to extend the ¡°temporal nature¡± of the narrative structure, and in the process, creating an absurd and incredible dramatic effect. It is almost as if the works are not meant for viewing, but rather beckoning to be carefully listened to ¨C a pent up listlessness finding an explanation in a lyrical and soft rhythm. A general social neurosis is described through the artist¡¯s own personal feelings. Everyone has a secret, a story, a phantasm which inhabits our fantasies. However, the weight and fineness of this ¡°gray¡± matter which blankets these moments, as well as the expression of everyday life which has relentlessly forced them to the bottom, has made people are more apt to adopt a self-destructive method to suppress these emotions. With surgical precision, Zhang Hui slowly peels back the layers, taking us deeper into this gray world. Unconsciously expressed on the surface of these works is the Chinese humanist tradition influencing the artist from his birth.
Exhibition is composed of oil paintings | ink paintings | sculpture/installation
