| The oscillation between "pain and happiness" is
the purlieu of He Jinwei, and while there are many types of
"purlieus", they are all unable to escape the conditions
of space and time. In the purlieus of He Jinwei, it is space
that is real with time becomes a doctrine (主义). "痛并快乐着
is the stinging pain that is brought about from the movements
and changes in reality, making the two almost indistinguishable
from one another. After this keenly felt pain, the feeling
of contact is brilliant and radiant. Behind the surface of
reality is the unresting social change."
In He Jinwei's words, upon first coming to Beijing from
Sichuan a few years prior, the "this type of bodily
displacement brought with it the "changing of reality"
in outside space. A few years later, this "layered
reality displacement" is commandingly and lithely reflected
in his 40 some paintings.
His works upon first arriving in Beijing are about the
emptiness of interior spaces. Within this emptiness, some
of it is the strength of reality, the space is empty, but
time is present all throughout. Time is empty, but through
hiding, space makes it real image present. The psychological
space within has been inflated into a puffed up cotton layer
that floats with this air. What unstably pulls you along
is the disparateness between yourself and the world outside.
Even if it is only for a moment, it will still penetrate
that ethereal feeling of loneliness.
And when He Jinwei has almost been completely swallowed
by the interior spaces and the evening atmosphere, he finds
another purlieu within a monument. Monuments are the hybridization
of architecture and humans, packaging both space and time.
At the same time as great architecture and its historical
metaphors are being relentlessly swallowed by the cityscape,
the cityscape itself is being monumentalized. Both share
a similar oppressiveness and slipperiness of texture. And
the distance pervasive throughout all reality and the its
motley accompaniments are often described with a happy gaiety,
or a dazzling array of stimulus. All contradictions are
erased under the somnambulist and theatrical light of the
evening air.
On display is a 40 painting 3 year retrospective display
of works by He Jinwei including the interior psychological
spaces and urban lights, as well as portraits and monuments,
together constructing a giant splendorous and ordinary reality.
