Zheng Guogu, Age of Empires ¨C A Case Study
in Play, exhibition poster; 2006
Exhibited here is not an artwork, but rather going against common
exhibition practice by exhibiting a poster announcing a future
exhibition. The project originally started as a proposal to once
more send down intellectuals to the countryside. In 2001, Zheng
Guogu purchased a plot of land approximately 20,000 sq. meters
in area in the village of Yangjiang, and just like that, a simulated
game became a game in reality. The artist began building stone
walls, ponds, planting trees and grass, digging up rocks building
houses, carving rivers and grottos, and building mountains. At
the same time, it was a project to become a "rural-ite",
a non rural inhabitant becoming a rural inhabitant. This entire
process slowly gained legal recognition. In 2006, the artist will
bring part of his countryside into urban space, and realize a
project in Factory 798 at the Long March Space.
