Hu Xiangcheng, Village Reconstruction, Installation and archival materials; 2006
After several years of research on building code violations in the rural area surrounding Shanghai, Hu Xiangcheng began collaborating with the local government to construct and realize his “ideal countryside”. As an artist, his body is the site of multiple cultural conflicts. He has been continually wandering in the space between traditional and modern civilization, he has opened another route within the totalizing nature of globalization. If the actions of an artists possess a type of idealism, then, is not the village reconstruction project (artwork), a site of violation within the context of globalization?
