Yang Shaobin 800 Meters Under at the Sharjah Biennial 8
April 9, 2007 ¨C Yang Shaobin¡¯s film, ¡°Abovegound-Underground¡±, part of his collaboration with the Long March Project 800 Meters, will be screened at the Sharjah Biennial 8, Sharjah, UAE.The film, which depicts the bound lives of coalminers in China both in and out of the mine, has been selected in the character of SB8¡¯s theme: ¡°Still Life: Art, Ecology, and the Politics of Change.¡±The Biennial will address the social, political, and environmental challenges of a growing urban landscape and its demands on natural resources.The film is composed of two poles of the life of a coalminer, the depths of the coalmines and their communities and dwellings.Yang Shaobin¡¯s film contributes a rare view and sensitive engagement with the facets of humanity among a community entrapped by its mines, history, and the politics of industrialization.
