What is "performance?"
The Long March holds a conference on "Performance"
Art
On February 24th 4pm, the directors of England's Live
Art Development Agency Lois Keidan and Daniel Brine
arrived at the 25000 Cultural Transmission Center. "Will
tell you why we came to China, what we are doing here,
as well as what is currently happening with performance
art in England," said Keidan. Having received a
joint invitation by the British Art Council and the
British Embassy's Cultural bureau to participate in
their "linking cultures" project, Keidan and
Brine's responsibilities include coordinating a mutual
exchange between Chinese and British artists, and also
investigating the current situation of "performance"
art in China. They will collect materials in China to
take back to England for examination and research in
order to clarify who should be part of the exchanges
and how the project should be implemented. Because the
discussion was suddenly organized, there was no time
to send a press release. Nonetheless, it still managed
to attract almost sixty Beijing artist and curators
who participated in the discussion. Director of the
25000 Cultural Transmission Center, Lu Jie, acted as
moderator. He first had the two guests introduce the
purpose of their visit, the state of England's "performance"
art, and a film of England's most famous art festival
TATE was also shown. Afterwards, Curator Shu Yang introduced
the specific details of "Performance Art Day"
and the "Open" art festival. Finally, Curator
and Artist Qiu Zhijie introduced "Post-Perception"
and a series of art activities as well as performance
art pieces that were a part of "The Long March
- a walking visual display." The three hour long
discussion revolved around the question of "What
is performance art?"
