Proposal
for the Long March Project
Title: The Long March ICQ (or Words on the Streets)
The
work involves the use of an on-line chat software, ICQ.
The curatorial team is asked to contact the artist via ICQ
(or e-mail or short message system on mobile phones), inform
their current location and the various issues raised by
the artists working on-site during that particular day.
Based on the latest information transmitted from the road,
I will look for an internet friend residing in the town/county/city
where the Long Marchers are staying, share the issues that
the artists are facing on the road with the chatter, while
inquiring the level of truthfulness of his/her identity
and address submitted to ICQ at the same time.
On-Line Exhibition Procedure:
The map of the Long March will be shown on the web page
updated accordingly as more information is transmitted.
The accounts of ICQ chats are to be presented with the chatter's
cartoon image on ICQ and personal information. A visitor
can access this information by clicking the links on the
map, browse through the accounts of previous and on-going
conversations, and can also take part in the chatting session.
The contents of the conversation will continue to be uploaded.
The entire work consists of continuously evolving map/diary
of ICQ conversation.
Future Exhibition:
Long strips of paper on top of which bare the conversations
with every internet friend will be hang on the wall of the
exhibition space. Every strip of paper shows the cartoon
image of the chatter on ICQ as well as his/her personal
information. I will take a seat at the center of the room,
chatting with all the internet friends made during the Long
March, simultaneously printing out the records of current
conversations. An assistant will tape the newly printed
ones to the ends of the ones already on the wall, thus every
strip of paper will continue to get longer. Visitors to
the exhibition can also take part in the chatting by either
raising some questions to myself or directly typing in the
questions on the computer.
My ICQ
number is 27204482 (nickname: Long March).
