A letter from Judy Chicago to the artists who realized works in Lugu Lake

To the artists who realized their works in Lugu Lake:

Thank you so much for your participation in the project "If Women Ruled the World" in LuguLake. I really appreciate the effort you made to come all the way there to work with me and the other artists to realize this project.

It was an extremely challenging task to work cross-culturally and from such a distance away and I think we did extremely well. Despite the language problem, we were able to connect with each other in a way that speaks highly about women's abilities to cooperate, even under difficult circumstances.

Although I have come away from Lugu Lake and my experiences there (including interviews with a number of Mosou women) concluding that there is no 'Kingdom of Women'(life for Mosou women is extremely hard), I feel heartened by what we did together. In closing, let me thank you again for your participation in "A Dialogue with Judy Chicago in Lugu Lake" and I wish you well.

                                      Warmly,

                                    Judy Chicago

A letter from Judy Chicago to the artists who exhibited their proposals in Lugu Lake

To the artists who exhibited their proposals in Lugu Lake:

Thank you for your participation in the project, If Women Ruled the World. All in all, we received almost thirty-five proposals and about twelve artists traveled to Lugu Lake to exhibit or to realize their work. We

took over an inn where we hung all the proposals, a series of banners I had created and brought from America and a number of images; there were also several installations there. In addition, there were performances and installations at a nearby beach and in the village. It was very exciting to see art all over Lugu Lake and to share our ideas with people who are rarely exposed to such art.

It was also exciting to have a dialogue with the women artists who came to Lugu Lake - I think we all learned a lot from each other. Most of all, it was thrilling to try and connect across geographical distance, culture and language and I think we all came away feeling as if all the struggles to accomplish this were worthwhile and that the project was a success. To see some of what we did together, be sure to check the Long March website.

      Thanks again,

                                     Judy Chicago
